Identify your goals

Monday

Often we spend our time working on what's urgent. But if that's all you do, you'll never get to what's strategic.

One of the best ways to identify your goals for the coming year might be to first identify your goals for your lifetime. That way this year you can start to work on things that are important for you to accomplish (but might not seem urgent).

What goals do you have for your lifetime in terms of:

  • your dreams?
  • your career?
  • your hobbies?
  • your family?
  • your relationships with others?
  • your relationship with God?
  • your body? your mind? your emotions?
  • other things important to you?

Write them down!

Tuesday

Look over your list from Monday. Is there anything you'd add after some reflection?

What wishes or impressions do you have that you kept off the list because they seem too unrealistic?

For each of the goals you wrote down, write down the next step you could take that could move you closer towards the goal. (It doesn't have to "make sense" or be perfect. Go with what seems like it would be a good step, even if you can't exactly explain why.) Ask for God's help as you consider the next steps that would be most strategic.

Wednesday
What goals do you have for the next year in terms of:

  • your dreams?
  • your career?
  • your hobbies?
  • your family?
  • your relationships with others?
  • your relationship with God?
  • your body? your mind? your emotions?
  • other things important to you?

Thursday
Look over your list from Wednesday.

Friday
At this point you should have two lists, one with ideas of what you want to accomplish in your lifetime, one with ideas of what you'd like to accomplish in a year. Is there anything that should be added to this year's list to help move you closer to your lifetime goals? Is there anything you'd add to either list?

Saturday
We've saved the best for last. Review your lists. Choose the one goal that you most want to accomplish -- the one that's closest to a desire of your heart (not the ones that other people think you should do, the one that you strongly desire to do). Today do something (anything) to move you closer towards that goal. Your assignment for the next 30 days: Do something once a day to move you closer towards that goal.
