A note from Pastor Mark:

This video talks about 1 John 3:2:

Beloved, we are God's children now; what we will be has not yet been revealed. What we do know is this: when he is revealed, we will be like him, for we will see him as he is.

I said in the video that the "he" in this passage refers to God the Father.

That probably should have been more nuanced.

One option, talked about in this video, is that the verse refers to God who created everything, and so should read: When God is revealed, we will be like God, for we will see God as God is.

Another option: the "he" refers to Jesus, the Son of God, who said, "The Father and I are one." In this case, the line "when he is revealed" would refer to Jesus, and probably to his return as the risen Messiah. If this guess is right, the line would read: When Jesus is revealed, we will be like the risen Christ, for we will see him as he is.

A third option is that the first "he" in the passage should be rendered "it," referring to "what we will be that has not been revealed."

In this case the verse it would read, "When what we will become is revealed, we will be like God [or the risen Christ] because we will see him as he is.

The bottom line of all these alternative readings is that the passage says we are now children of God; we are moving to an even more amazing future where we will either be like the risen Christ or like God.

God bless you as you meditate on this passage and on its meaning for your life.
