Be blessed like Elizabeth
Luke says Elizabeth "was righteous before God, living blamelessly according to all the commandments and regulations of the Lord." (1:8, NRSV) Wow! Not many people in the Bible received such praise or achieved such faithfulness.
But in spite of her great faithfulness, she endured decades of disgrace. She couldn't have a baby, and she felt the community's reproach.
You can do everything right and still feel shame for something that's not your fault.
On the other hand, some people commit terrible acts and feel no shame at all. Fortunately, God can set you free, no matter what your situation.
When has shame been helpful in your life?
When has shame been a hindrance in your life?
God, thank you for your mercy for Elizabeth and for giving her the desire of her heart. Set everyone free from shame that they do not deserve. And when we are doing things that are not helpful, help us to replace those behaviors with things that are good. Thank you. Amen.
